An awful lot depends on where you're going, what you're going to be doing, how long, what the conditions are, and so forth. For instance, if I'm going out for a routine one-hour exercise paddle after work on a quiet lake on a summer evening, I don't take much -- just paddle, PFD, leg pad, hat, and the boat, along with emergency glucose tablets (I'm diabetic) and a little water. But it builds from there. Frequent additions are spray skirt, camera, better snacks, paddle float, spare clothes. In cooler weather, warmer clothing/protective gear, up through wet suit, neoprene gloves and booties, but this usually doesn't kick in until the combination of water and air temperature add up to less than 100. As I said, it depends. -- Wes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wes Boyd 0 wesboyd_at_dmci.net boydwe_at_dmci.net (Listservers) \__Q http://www2.dmci.net/users/wesboyd/default.htm \_| http://www2.dmci.net/users/wesboyd/kayak.htm \----------\^----------/ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^0^^^^^^^^^^^^ *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
A couple more items that I might add to this list would be: A hand-held VHF radio Matches A space blanket (in the event of unplanned camping) Flares My personal list also includes a can of capsicum-based bear spray - but that probably won't apply in most places in the US. I also usually leave some type of float plan with a friend. Your personal list should probably take into account the waters and environment that you paddle in.
