Garmin fixed their unit for a standard fee of $8.00
after the warrenty expired. Their fee applied if someting small was
damaged like an internal lithium battery to keep the memory safe or if
they had to replace the entire system. Garmin did not even ask for proof
of purchase.

The lithium battery failed in my first Garmin GPS 12XL (the one I gave
the immersion test to) a few months after I bought it. I called the
local Boat/US store where I bought it to see if they had another in
stock, then, after work, I exchanged it for a brand-new one. The total
time I was in the store was five minutes -- no charge or paperwork.

BTW, the best prices I have seen on GPS units in the Twin Cities have
been at the Gander Mountain stores.
