Man! I'm sick of this weather! Have not paddled for over a month!

Here is the data for Astoria, OR, for yesterday, February 24:

> ...PRECIPITATION...
>
> YESTERDAY............. 1.34
> TOTAL FOR THE MONTH... 15.27
> NORMAL MONTH TO DATE.. 6.59
> TOTAL FOR THE YEAR.... 29.13 TOTAL SINCE OCT 1... 72.12
> NORMAL YEAR TO DATE... 16.59 NORMAL FROM OCT 1... 42.92
>
> ...WIND DATA IN MPH...
>
> AVERAGE WIND SPEED YESTERDAY... 19.7
> FASTEST 2-MIN WIND YESTERDAY... 43 FROM 180 DEGREES
> PEAK WIND GUST YESTERDAY....... 61 FROM 170 DEGREES

Do I get any sympathy from those blessed with the solid version of water?

Anybody got a cure for the rainy weather blues?

Here's one: stop whining and go paddling! :-)

As my grandfather used to say, "Happiness lies not in having what you
want, but in wanting what you have." The key is to *want* to paddle in
the rain. Not to merely "tolerate" the rain, or to "not mind the damp"
(as an author stated in WaveLength magazine), but rather to actually
enjoy the rain, to relish its cooling effect, to enjoy the new
perspective of paddling completely surrounded by water, to feel it
tickle your face as you paddle into the wind...

I can't wait for my next outing--I just hope that it's raining!

Same thing here in Victoria. And I don't think I can learn to love paddling
in 90 knot winds. Seems like 90 knots, anyway.

It's been unpredictable as to whether the ferries sail on any given day or
time or not because of the wind. The helijet comes and goes regardless.
Yikes.

It is a good thing. It is giving me time to read

"Weather for the Mariner" by Kotsch, William J. ISBN: 0-87021-756-9

After the first 3 chapters, I look at the weather map at
http://www.weather.com,
then look at the clouds, the wind direction, and suddenly it all
makes sense.

I can now predict the upcoming weather for the next 6 hours with
a lot of confidence, which comes in handy when trying to find a
'window' to paddle in the ocean.

It is a great book; I recommend it strongly to the paddling community.

Yep, I've got a cure. The answer is whitewater river kayaking. Myself and
most of my friends get pretty excited when it rains, because the rivers
come up. It really turns your worldview around in a good way for denizens
of the PNW. "I hate rain" becomes "I love rain".

Another little secret about whitewater kayaking is that it is "old fart
friendly". Not that I am accusing anyone at all of being an old fart, but
last summer I taught four 50+ sea kayakers the basics of whitewater while
teaching some classes for George Gronseth. They all did as well as the
younger folks, as the difficulty in whitewater is not strength or stamina,
but finesse. We offer the use of sit-on-tops whitewater kayaks that really
facilitate the learning process.

Cheers,
kevin

Hey Dave, send some of that precip. on west! Been the driest winter in
recent memory on the Colorado front range. We'd LOVE some rain or snow!

>Do I get any sympathy from those blessed with the solid version of water?

No, but I'll rub it in a little ;-> Was so nice yesterday that I took the
afternoon off and took my canoe to the local puddle which just (mostly)
liquefied last weekend. Paddled 4 or 5 miles (4 laps around)and caught a
couple little trout. Sunburn weather. Are you jealous yet?

>Anybody got a cure for the rainy weather blues?

We get our monsoons in late spring/early summer. I generally try to ignore
it and carry on as usual. Easy climbing routes take on a new challenge when
wet. The hills are lovely and green-smelling in the rain, and finding a dry
spot beneath an overhanging rock to build a fire and toast a hot-dog is a
treat. The fish don't seem to mind the rain, and the canoe doesn't really
fill up . . .
'Course you've been averaging close to an inch a day this month. That,
coupled with 40MPH gusts must be pretty hard to ignore; sure ain't boating
weather! Bet there's plenty of snow in the Cascades! Do you ski? Snowshoe?
Snowmobile? Maybe western Washington/Oregon is getting better weather and a
weekend get-away is in order; surely they have some open water where one
might paddle a bit. Take heart that at least the days are getting longer,
and it's only 34 days til April.

Hang in there! S.
