I think a rough water, paddlewise trip would be great. How long would you
take for the trip you suggested? I don't have my maps in front of me, but
it would take a couple days to get to Sucia from Washington park, wouldn't
it?

If we need a shorter trip --- one that could be crammed into a weekend ---
we could ply the bowman bay area and the rough waters of deception pass.
I've never paddled in the surging waters of the pass, but I've heard that it
can be really wild. Another advantage of the bowman bay area, is people not
up for the most intense waters can join us, but just stay on shore during
peak current. That way a larger number of paddlewise members can join in.

What do the rest of you folks think?

Tim, You can bet that I would enter a rough water race. Although I might
prefer an obstacle course through Deception pass...

But instead of a rough water Paddlewise race, how about a rough water
paddlewise trip? My preferred destination would be Boiling Reef at the
southeast end of Saturna Island. This is the only place on the map that
has an adjective in front of those magic words: "tide rip" -- it says
"very Heavy tide rips". The preferred route would be Washington park to
Sucia, then Sucia to Saturna. From there, we could either go back the
way
we came, or head all the way to Sidney and catch a fery. I think there
is
some merit in trying to organize a paddlewise members trip. What do you
think?

I think it could be a three day trip -- It is a 18nmi paddle from
Washington Park to Sucia. Certainly doable in one day, except that the
flood currents in may/june do not start up until about noon. However, the
flood current gives about a 3 knot boost in the middle of Rosario
Strait. So it is probably feasible to make it there in one day even
with a late start. And there are some great playspots along the way!
Strawberry Island rip is the proving ground for George Gronseths students,
and the Peapods are supposed to be like a class three river, and
the Lawrence point rip is also fun. There is a multitude of smaller
rips between LP and Sucia. The second day could be spent playing
at boiling reef, and camping on Cabbage Island near Tumbo Island. The
Third would probably best be spent traveling to Sidney, perhaps by a
comination paddle and ferry ride. Of course, a fourth day would add lots
of extra options. I wonder how many paddlewisers would be willing to take
four days off work?

The Deception Pass idea is pretty good, since it would allow for many more
Paddlewisers to meet. I would really like to meet everyone face to
face. Maybe the thing to do is organize a Paddlewise
rendezvous at Bowman Bay sometime this spring. Who would be intersted in
attending this? Organizing it?
