Re the cost of chimps, cheap alternatives and simple modification

They need to be modified a bit, the handle taken off, and a stainless
spring fitted - its very simple to do. Some leave the handle on and use
shock cord attached under their deck and to the handle to draw the
diaphragm back.

I posted a reply to a similar question a couple of weeks ago. I'll repeat as
Jack asked for "any ideas". I ordered the SS spring from the UK through a
marine supply store, to convert my Henderson deck pump to a foot pump. It
was taking forever to arrive and was very expensive. Tired of waiting, I
went to a kayak store that had some new foot pumps. We took it apart, and my
almost identical deck pump, laying the parts out on the table. The spring
did not fit exactly, as the inner pump body housing was slightly different
for the foot model where the diaphram is mounted. My recollection is that it
could be made to work, but the foot pedal spun 360 degrees, rather than
remaining verticle. The marine store was able to e-mail the UK and cancel
the spring order (of course I ordered a new foot pump from them for their
troubles).

I don't know if this is applicable to the Whale pump, as I have not looked
into it (literally).<G>. Before ordering parts or having a spring custom
made, try and find someone with the spring, first. Also, the wooden pedal
mount is different from the handle type, and will require tinkering. In the
end I decided to go the expensive route (I wanted to be_ PedalWise_) ,
figuring my life was worth a few lousy hundred bucks.

For comments about the Henderson pump's ability to remove water, I believe
Sea Kayaker Magazine had a letter from Frank Goodman a few years back
defending it (don't have my index handy for issue/date). Hope that helps,
Bob and Jack.
