My hat of choice for kayaking and most other outdoor activities is a Tilly's Endurable. Mine is old and beat up, but it has a wide enough brim to keep my neck and ears protected, it floats, the strap system works to keep it on my head when I am going too fast to just keep it on by pulling it down tight. So far I have worn out two of the strap cords and the hat is going strong.
