>> The knu-pak is nice, I tried it this last weekend at Canoecopia. What it does... it allows a person to empty the storage compartments of the boat, fill the pack mounted drybag with all your gear and carry the weight - ALL of it on your hips. This is unbelievable comfort. You cannot fathom how simple and comfortable this system is. IT WORKS VERY WELL. Believe it. >> This sounds similar to my method of portaging a canoe. I wear a Lowe Expedition internal frame pack on portages, and carry the canoe by resting the canoe's portage yoke on the adjustment straps that run from the top of the pack to the top of the shoulder straps. By adjusting the length of the straps, I find I can balance the canoe well enough to walk with my hands in my pockets. Because much of the weight of the canoe is transferred directly to my hips, portaging the pack and canoe together this way is actually more comfortable than portaging the canoe by itself. However, note that the yoke on my canoe is a low profile, one-piece, carved yoke, and that the front part of the yoke rests on my shoulders; other types might not work as well, at least, not in the same way.
