Portage means to pick up all your gear out of the canoe or kayak at one
location and walk it over to the next location where you will put all the
gear back into the canoe or kayak. Invariably, one or two small items are
accidently lost en route.

The word "portage" later evolved into the word "luggage" with the advent of
airlines and terminals. Over time, technology has improved to allow ever
larger objects to be lost en route.
