My partner and I will be driving by Lake Superior twice this summer: late May and mid-July. We're particularly interested in Isle Royal NP, but understand there are some other venues for expedition kayaking. We'll have the kayaks and gear we need, but we've never been to Lake Superior and only know what we've read here-- that the water is very cold and the weather can be horrible just about anytime! Will trying to paddle Isle Royal in May allow us to beat the bugs or is it likely to get us blown off the planet? Has anybody tried or have info on making the crossing to Isle Royal from Canada? Looks like it's less than a 20-mile paddle at one point. I don't think the ferries run in May.
