In browsing through some news archives, I found an interesting story
about scientists at MIT who have developed a robotic kayak that is used
for studying fish, marine mammals, and turtles. The battery-powered
kayak is equiped with an on-board computer, GPS navigation, and acoustic
sensors used for tracking wildlife. Check out the story on ENN (the
Environmental News Network):

(You may have to subscribe to access the article, but if you are
interested in environmental issues you will probably find that
subscribing is well worth the modest subscription fee.)
