big the fleet is getting.) I'm still thinking.

Which leads me to ask you, fellow PaddleWisers, what would
<you> do if someone trashed your boat by accident and gave you
the replacement cost? Would you buy what you've got now or
something else. And why?

Jack, et al:

I'd love the newer Nordkapp, now called the Jubilee, but it is so expensive
in Canada now with the devaluation of our currency. I also hate fiberglass
- too hard to repaire and make it look good after. A number of friends are
making or have made there own boats out of 1/8" doorskins. Covered with
glass and epoxy, then painted, they are very tough. The epoxy wears
increadible well whenever the kayak is dragged up the beach. repairs
(uncommon) are easy, and repainting easily accomplished. Kayaks can be
sized according to paddler, etc, and chines added for a more stable boat
for a given width. Cost is low, if you have free time (just get rid of the
TV). People are also building there own Baidarkas - ammazingly strong and
nimble kayaks, they are.

As an avid woodworker, I think Iwill be making my own kayak this year
sometime. I will choose the Outer Island strip built plan. It is based on
the Norkcapp, but rolls a heck of a lot easier, and I will be able to do a
lot more Greenland style tricks (Greenland style paddling and kayaks being
the emerging religion of the Millenium).

Would I get another Nordkapp, hmmmm. Do I wish I had married someone
different than the spouse I have, hmmmm. Don't know for sure, but they are
both the best friends I've ever had. Good night.

As a total klutz with limited woodworking skills, I <am> building my
own wood boat, too. Don't be put off by Doug's "avid woodworker"
reference, however --- he'll just build a prettier (strip-built boats are
absolutely beautiful) boat and he'll do it better and faster. If I can
add to my fleet at $500 to $600 for a kit and some spare time ---
well, okay, a lot of spare time! --- kits will be my means of fleet
expansion from here on.

Has anyone seen / paddled (rowed) / built the new (kit) boat from Chesapeake
Light Craft, the Annapolis Wherry? Though I have no demonstrated talent
for woodworking, I can follow directions and have a normal amount of dexterity -
and I am longing to build this boat. For those of you who have built boats, did
you have prior woodworking or building or engineering experience, or were
you a novice?

Seen, yes; rowed, no. Lust after as my next boat? Absolutely.
Appears to be very easy build, Anne. Chris Kulczycki's new stitch
and glue technique, cleverly called Lapstitch, makes the kit come
together easily. And the boat is incredibly beautiful. (Wanna
guess what Chris says the next boat he builds for <himself> is
gonna be?)

I'm a total novice, and am currently building a CLC North Bay from
a kit. Very strightforward design, and a beautiful boat, too. Good
manuals, plans. Great materials. And there's a really helpful wood
boat building BBS, courtesy of Nick Schade of Guillemot at
<http://www.guillemot-kayaks.com/links>, too.
