Well my vacation spot this summer has beed decided for me. So it's either
sit around a cabin all day and look at the inlaws or find a place for some
flatwater paddling. Looks like a place called Douglas Lake might be near by.
Someone also suggested Fontana lake further to the south. Douglas lake is
closer and is HUGE so I think that should keep me busy for a few weeks.

Anyone have any experience with either of those two places or can suggest
something else in the area?

Thanks in advance,

Woody

Fontana's northern shore is Great Smoky Mountains National Park's
southern boundary, so there is no way to get there except by foot or
boat. This may be attractive. Also, there are very few marinas for a
lake of this size, so the power boat traffic is comparatively low.

Two lakes downstream is Calderwood Reservoir. 200-300 yards wide and
eight miles long. Nice daytrip, and the most boats I've ever seen on it
is 5, counting mine. Put-in is in the day use area on the Tennessee side
below the bridge below the dam, kinda hard to find. Camping is no good,
as the shore is basically vertical :( Also, the water comes from the
bottom of Cheoah Dam, so it's cold, even in July. If the water is low,
look for the sea caves on river right.

Thanks to all who responded privately and publicly to my request about info
on Fontana and Douglas Lake. Three of you who responded had been to Fontana
20-25 years ago (maybe you all knew each other in the 70s?). Interestingly,
while I got many responses on Fontana, I got none on Douglas Lake. Maybe no
one has gone into that area and lived to tell about it? (sounds of banjos)

Since I'll be there 2 weeks maybe I can check out both locations.

Thanks again to all,

Woody
