Any recommendations/favorites - looking for a deck bag to hold a few
essentials and conveniences. Needs to be dunk proof, is it a good waterproof
zipper closure that makes such a small item so relatively expensive? Thanks

Sams Club and Costco have a two bottle fanny pack for <$10. Cut off the
straps and drop in two brass grommets on each side to hold a piece of bungee
with small SS hooks. The bottle pockets will hold a water bottle, Gatorade
or VHF radio, The top mesh pocket is great for flares or whistle, the closed
top pocket is where I keep the GPS and the big inner pocket is splash proof
and will hold snacks, glasses, keys, etc.

I've had mine for a couple of years and it's still going strong. I was it
after every Saltwater immersion.

Sports Authority has plastic grommets. Perhaps these are a better choice.

Yes, a waterproof zipper costs and adds to the $$$ you pay. But it is
worthwhile. The best of the bags in my opinion are those by Long Haul
Products, which is an off shoot of the Klepper Repair Service.

The bags are intended for use as cockpit bags inside Kleppers and other
foldables. There are grommets in each corner as well as webbing straps
in the top two corners with snap buckles. It is made of heavy duty
hypalon, arguably the strongest of materials better than anything nylon
that is coated. It holds an amazing amount. I use mine mainly in my
K-light and Nautiraid single between my legs as I do not like having
anything beyond pump and paddlefloat on deck. But I do move it to the
deck if loaded with camping gear and things in the cockpit. Costs
around $85. There are now two different sizes. Phone 970-856-3662.

Dan,

I just purchased a SealLine Deck bag (can't remember the "model" name or number). It has a (so far) waterproof or at least highly water resistant zipper with storm flap, bungies on top (especially nice if you cover up your forward deck bungies with the bag), D rings and bungie sections with clips to attach it to you boat, and a small mesh pouch on the front for wet-able things. It also has a plastic stiffener so it works more like a compartment than a "bag" on
your deck. It also comes with a shoulder strap in case you want to use it for excursions or something. It took some thinkin' to get it attached conveniently to my boat (Dagger Edisto), as it's pretty wide. Since I have a relatively wide boat (24.25", I think), a really narrow boat might not fit it as well. Cost was reasonable (US$ 61.95), compared to the drycell deck bag pushed by Perception and Dagger (Aside: I know that Dagger and Perception are owned by
the same parent company now, but has anyone noticed that their accessories are identical?) which goes for over $100, more for the map case and mesh bag.

Cheers,

Steve
