Does anyone have any experience with Palm's paddling jackets. They claim to
have a waterproof yet breathable "hydrophilic" coating. Are they as breathable
as gore-tex? Price levels seem to be nearly half that of gore-tex, would be
nice to think that it works as well. I have always been curious whether or not
gore-tex price levels were artifiicially higher because there is no equal, or
whether it actually is an expensive process to control. Thanks - Dan

My understanding of why Gore-tex is so much more expensive than similar
waterproof/breathable items is not so much in the construction of the item
but rather the amount of money Gore invests in Research and Development to
improve their current items and to create new products (ie. windstopper,
dry-loft, submersible gore-tex and medical grade gore-tex). Gore also has an
extensive testing program to ensure the mulitude of companies that use their
products meet their quality standards.

Do take the above statement with a grain of salt, as I was told this by a
gore-tex rep when I challenged them on the prices of their garments. It does
seem logical to me though when I consider the advancements Gore-tex has
made over the years and the new innovations they have brought to the
marketplace, where other companies have usually copied existing products.

Dan - this was discussed in the group a couple of weeks ago. The drift of
opinion seemed to be that the Palm jackets might or might not be as waterproof
as the Kokotat ones, but because of their thinner coatings, they probably
wouldn't be as durable. That might not be a big disadvantage in my case.

-- Yeah sorry about bringing up again, I couldn't remember if it was this
group or rec.boats.paddle who discussed Palm recently. Guess I thought it was
RBP and though t that I would bring it up here. - -

My other reservation is that as far as I know, they have a spandex or neoprene
neck closure, which would be more comfortable but less waterproof than a latex
closure.

However - I'm seriously considering purchase of a Palm drytop. So I'll be very
interested in the responses you get. If you get any replies which are not
posted to the group, it would be a great help if you would forward them on to
me.

Thanks in advance for your help - Bill Hansen

No comments received that wren't posted here. I think that I will give one a
try, may be a case of me spending a 100 bucks and finding out later that I
should of sprung for the real thing. - Dan
