Last summer I recall Costco selling some small SOTs about 8' long or so. They were the type someone might use playing in a pool or at the beach, but not really suitable for much more. I haven't seen any decked boats there. Our 2 local REI stores sell all types of paddling gear and my experience has been that their sales people are fairly knowledgeable. I doubt they would sell a kayak to someone without stressing the need for proper training.
