You can usually hear them around most campsites, sometimes far off, but usually camped fairly close by to your tent !! I, myself, was once taken hostage by a band of marauding mosquitos. They stopped at the edge the woods and one of the mosquitos said, "Do we eat him here at the beach or take him further into the woods ?" I distinctly heard the answer that if "they went further into the woods, the really BIG mosquitos would take me away from them !!"
