Kim;
If money is no object then a Gortex drysuit is far and away the best way
to go. Its great advantage in hot weather and cold water is that it is
easy to cool off by simply splashing yourself (consider wearing a hat
that you can dip in the water and keep your head cool too). If I am to
be considered anything in kayaking I would have to consider myself an
expert in gear. I have spent untold thousands of dollars on gear and
boats ($40,000-50,000 plus) and over a number of years and have tried
and abandoned many systems. For a long time now I have worn a Gortex
drysuit very comfortably in warm and cold weather on cold water. I have
three Gortex drysuits at present (a heavyweight Meridian by Kokatat, a
custom two-piece by Kokatat and a custom light-weight Meridian by
Kokatat) plus a couple of Kokatat Gortex dry-tops. All have relief
zippers which, with a little creativity, work well for women too. Next
to your boat and paddle I consider a Gortex drysuit to be the smartest
thing to do with your money. You will notice that they are all Kokatat
as well. Kokatat makes only the best gear and they really stand behind
everything they make.
You also asked for opinions on a Feathercraft K-1. I own a K-1 and I
used to own a Khatsalano. If you want a folding kayak that approaches
the handling characteristics of a rigid boat then Feathercraft is the
way to go. They take a little more time to assemble than some of the
other folders out there (though it gets easier and faster with time and
practice) but they are worth it.
