I would hesitate to sew any D-rings to the deck. The hypalon hull is
the best place for them as I indicated in my book with a recommendation
about these patches. The hypalon patch using contact cement becomes
part of the hull just like an inner tube repair patch. Among other
sources is NRS (http://www.nrs.com 1-800-635-5202) which sells one at
$7.50 (3 inch patch with 1 inch D ring). These are more than sufficient
for life lines and such and can even support webbing handles at the bow
and stern for lifting your boat.

Again, that is kosher advice right from my book. I recommend you read
it, :-). The cockpit area of most folding kayaks offers lots of room
for gear and longerons and gunwales for attaching this gear too. The
nice thing about packing stuff in the cockpit area is that it is neutral
in terms of trim as it is the center of the boat. Anything you put
there will not affect performance whether hit by sidewinds or rear
quartering forces.
