My Mariner MAX has a dubble lines one of 1/4" rope and the other a bungee
that the spare take-apart paddle fits under. Hand pumps, paddle floats and
deck mounted compass's have all disappeared but the spare stays put. It is
the one thing I have never lost in the surf zone.
The configuration allows the paddler to pull the paddle half's off the back
deck. See you put them together while upside down then roll up!
 It works in the pool.
