I'd be interested in getting comments from people
using Ultralight graphite paddles from Lightning.
Would this be an alternative even for "normal" touring
people - like me - or is it for pros only..?!

Thanks
Niilo

Ultralight paddles, are for everyone. Getting rid of the extra weight
is wonderful. If you are using a 39 ounce paddle instead of a 23 ounce
paddle that's an extra pound of weight you are lifting on each stroke.
If you paddle at 50 strokes per minute thats an extra 50 pounds per
minute, 300 pounds per hour. Sure you'll be stronger after you get used
to the heavier paddle, but is it worth it?

I'm sure my numbers are off based on bouyancy, and swing weight, but they're
good enough for an example.

Now that I've claimed they are for everyone I'll admit to regularly using
wood paddles because I like the feel of a wood paddle. I've got a lightning
ultralight and it gets equal usage with my other paddles. Although the
ultralight will be the first choice if I'm going out for a long jaunt.

I bought a Lightning Ultralight several years ago - and the next paddle I
buy will likely be a Lightning Ultralight as well. If you buy one don't
lend it to a paddling buddy, you'll never get it back! They're pricey, but
in my estimation well worth every penny.
The Broze brothers have quite a write-up about Lightning paddles on their
web site - check out the Paddles section at www.marinerkayaks.com.

Niilo, I'm no pro, but neither am I "normal." ;) I can, however, say that
my Lightning paddle was _the_ best purchase I've made out of all my gear and
equipment. Sandy

I have used a Lightning Ultralight paddle for about 5 years and it has been one of the most enjoyable, efficient, and durable paddles I have used (compared to Werner, Current Design, and one other Canadian paddle name I can't remember). I paddle almost daily in generally heavy winds and waves. Ken Johnson
