Since I show everyone else's screw ups on video I have to own up to this one. I lost my paddle in Deception Pass. I was filming Tim Walsh, at the East end of Pass Island. He was in front of my trying to get around to the Canoe pass side. The current in the eddy pushed my into the cliff, as I had on the Hi8 camera, and then the paddle was gone. I held on to the kelp and barnacled covered cliff face as Tim retrieved the rapidly disappearing paddle. Its on video you can hear my "Tim I have a problem" in a less then a clam voice. No one had a spare. I should have secured it under a bungee.etc etc. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
I'm _quite_ surprised by the fact that in a group of experienced paddlers no one had a spare paddle. Any reason why not? One of the reasons that I'm asking is that I'm wondering how many of us get complacent about observing safety issues when paddling our "home" waters - areas that we may paddle every day and be extremely familiar with. (having been at Deception Pass several times I really can't imagine being complacent about paddling there!) how about a paddle leash? I'd have thought it the thing to do if planning to have hands otherwise occupied, even if you have misgivings about them as some do. Sticking it under bungie is asking for it to slip out , get caught in things, twist, and generally be a nuisance. nick gill *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
