According to Reuters news agency, Canadian archaeologists working on a site near Frobisher Bay in the new territory of Nunavut announced a major new find. Included in the artifacts are the mid and stern sections of an Inuit kayak, which preliminary estimates place at approximately 400 years old. The mid section is reported to be particularly well preserved. According to Reuters, "Experts from the Canadian Museum of Civilization are very excited about a feature not yet seen before in kayaks from this period. Long, narrow tubes constructed of what appears to be seal skin are attached to the sides of the kayak with hide thongs." The archaeologists went on to explain that it would be "premature" to draw any conclusions regarding the purpose of these devices.
