Hi-
I am a newcomer to this list, but have enjoyed listening in so far, and
am hoping that someone out there can answer my question...

I am from New Hampshire and have been sea kayaking for a little under 2
years, mostly in large lakes and protected bays. I've done a lot of
paddling but I have always launched from docks or enbankments, and have
never done a surf landing. Right now I am interested in finding a place
along the open coast where I can practice surf landings. I know some of
the local beaches allow surfing, but I don't know if they would tolerate
a kayak or not. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good practice
area in southern ME or NH? I am also very interested in suggestions for
good beginner/intermediate daytrips...

Allison

Hello Allison,

>along the open coast where I can practice surf landings. I know some of

Popham Beach at the mouth of the Kennebec River for sure and probably Plum
Island south of the mouth of the Merrimack in Mass. BEWARE THE EBB TIDE at
these rivers' mouths. People have died out there and large boats capsized.

Have you considered a surf zone class? http://www.mainesport.com/ offers a
couple classes a year. I went last year.

Wells Beach below Kennebunkport (say hello to George Bush) has a lot of surf
boarders.

The beach or the surfers? :-) Dunno about the surfers but I don't recall
any signs saying they're prohibited anywhere. IMHO, if you can get to the
water, you're allowed in. Just head for a deserted part of the beach and
respect the surfers.

Hopefully some the Southern Maine Sea Kayak Network people will add to these
remarks.

Practice? Surf practice? Where there is surf, otherwise, where there is
water? :-)

Great Bay and Kittery Point (I'll be there tomorrow, gray beard, purple hat,
organge kayak, testing out dry suit)are the closest NH areas. Email me for
directions. In general, get a Maine Atlas & Gazetteer and look for
interesting looking locations with nearby boat ramps. For other trips,
