Aspect ratio is the ratio of the length of an object to its width, and
it's used for airplane wings, sails, motion picture formats, and TV
formats, among other things. With paddles, it refers to the ratio of the
length of the paddle blade to its width. If for instance, the length of
a blade is twice the width, the aspect ratio is 2:1. If the blade is four
times the width, its aspect ratio is 4:1. The latter aspect ratio is
"higher" than the former. A typical Greenland paddle has an aspect ratio
of around 10:1.

Uh oh - I've missed something basic again. What is "aspect ratio" as it
applies to paddles? I need a really basic, practical description. This is a
new concept to me - ove which has probably been explained in group postings
and which I either overlooked or never understood in the beginning. - Bill
