Anne, I don't know if it is practical to launch on the Sansum side, but suspect that if their is public beach access without too many cliffs, it's probably doable. I know I've used the "human chain" method of passing boats, and it works most places. My favorite trip in the area is to launch from Nanaimo (either in town or Duke Point - the latter can be a challenge, because your launching off of a big sandstone shelf - waves, while not that common, can beat you up) and paddling SE through the islands to Village Bay (one of the easiest take outs - the beach has a walkway to the ferry dock). It is usually a 2-3 day trip (depending on the weather). You'll want to get familiar with the currents (tables, velocities, locations, etc.) and make sure you have the skills needed to enjoy the trip. There are a number of places to camp, and the distance between possible campsites it generally less than 15 miles. Have fun - Saul -----Original Message----- From: Anne Lednicer <anneled_at_sprynet.com> To: PaddleWise_at_lists.intelenet.net <PaddleWise_at_lists.intelenet.net> Date: Friday, May 21, 1999 8:50 AM Subject: [Paddlewise] Saltspring island launches into Sansum narrows - Gulf islands >Does anyone know of any Saltspring island launches into Sansum narrows (Gulf >islands) - my Gulf islands books only mention launches from Vancouver Island >into this area, but it looks like there might be a launch at Vesuvius above >Booth Bay - I would appreciate any information on this subject - Thank You. >(and also any comments on other's favorite kayaking spots in the Gulf >Islands - we're exploring them for the first time over Memorial Day. > >*************************************************************************** >PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List >Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net >Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net >Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ >*************************************************************************** > *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************Received on Sun May 23 1999 - 10:26:20 PDT
