One of the easiest website file download "methods" I have used, is to put
the file (kayakdesign.xls) on your website. Then change one of your main
html pages by adding a link to that file right on the page. Something like:
HREF="Test/kayakdesign.xls". This assumes that the subdirectory "Test" is
where the spreadsheet "kayakdesign.xls" is located.

Then put an instruction for someone to either click on it (to run it) or to
"right click"  (to download it).

You should be able to try this out by going to almost any website and "right
clicking" on a link - I know you can do it to mine:
http://www.isomedia.com/homes/saul

I hope this helps, I've only designed (if you can call it that) one website
in my life, so no expertise is claimed.
