Just hanging around the Big Apple. Saturday I will do volunteer dock
duty at the Downtown Boathouse's free program of kayak paddling for the
public in lower Manhattan (last year we put 6,000 people on the water as
part of this.) Go for a leisurely drive on Sunday and, well, for the
actual Memorial Day Monday...below is my plan.

have a good and safe holiday,

With these three-day holiday weekends it is easy to forget what they
originally signified. I guess most of us see this coming weekend as the
start of the summer season and getting outdoors for picnics and
barbecues. And it is that.

But Memorial Day is something more. I would like to return a bit to
what the holiday is supposed to honor. So, I am planning a Memorial Day
Paddle on Monday from the Downtown Boathouse to the Intrepid aircraft
carrier museum to cast some flowers on the waters in memory of those who
made the supreme sacrifice in our nation's wars.

I hope we can get close enough as sometimes they establish a security
zone around the naval war ships that are in for Fleet Week and berth
there.

You are welcome to join me and my wife Donna on this trip. We will
start at 10 am from the Boathouse. After visiting the area of the
Intrepid, we will then go on to the 79th St Boat Basin for lunch. The
roundtrip distance is around 9 miles or so, i.e. 4.5 miles each way.

On the way up, I will probably go slow as I tend to like to look at what
is happening with the waterfront and to view unique places like the bow
cut in the seawall that was put there to allow longer ships to dock
without their sterns sticking out beyond the pier line.

If interested, just show up, and bring flowers.
