Doug,
Can you elaborate on characteristics you want in a storm boat? What do your
storm paddling friends think of the boats you listed above?

Although I don't intend to storm paddle, I am interested in boats that make
travel in windy and rough, but not extreme, conditions easier and safer and
less fatiguing.

Wouldn't it be desirable to have a bit more volume as in the Gulf Stream?

Would the CD GTS, a very stiff tracking boat, be almost a death trap,
similar to the skegged Nordkapp? On the other hand, if ww boats cause
problems don't you want a straight tracking boat?

Do most storm paddlers ballast their boats? How do they get the fore/aft
trim right?

Is stability an issue at all? I feel comfortable in a stable 22" beam boat
such as the CD GTS in chop and following seas but a twittery 22" boat like
the Necky Arluk 1.9 makes me nervous in following seas. A 21" Nordkapp or
20.5" P&H Sirius would frighten me. Why not have a bit more, but not too
much, stability?

Why are British boats favored when there are so many Canadians?

Finally, what about the Nordkapp makes it such a good storm boat? Does it
require the long rudder that you talked about?

Jerry

Its the boater skill not the boat design that survives the storm. Some
designs make it less work and more fun. I would recommended any Mariner
kayak. I use the "MAX" model.
Some people in the Northwest find foreigner boats exotic and compete to see
who has the narrowest.

While I do know people who might even give up kayaking if it wasn't for
their Mariner kayak, I do take exception to the narrow foreign boat notion.
I had huge battles here in Victoria in the early eighties when folks like
Brian Henry who formed Current Designs, claimed narrow British boats as
somewhat dangerous (yes, there was a context to his statements, and there
is some truth to the name, Nordcrap). I see now he has a new boat out
called the Extreme. At 18'10" and 21" wide, does that count as narrow. A
number of North American boat builders include narrow designs in their
line-ups these days. So nix the foreign designation. Heck, nix the British
and the modern North American kayaks alltogether, and think about those
ancient Artic kayaks - now those were narrow! :-)

to my *narrow* mindset!) <G>

I had the chance to paddle an Extreme while at a local demo days (while my wife and I were waiting for a canoe being tested by someone else). Fantastic! It was love at first paddle. It tracked well but had excellent secondary stability so you could make nice leaned turns. Just sitting still I was pleased with how far I could lean it on its side without having to brace or hip snap back up, all the way to water coming in the cockpit (and I ain't no expert either).

I wanted it, I wanted it, I wanted it! :) But there was Julie saying we already have kayaks, we're here to get a canoe. We'll upgrade to fiberglass kayaks another year. <sigh> :)

BTW, we ended up ordering a Wenonah Ultra light kevlar Minnesota II. BWCA here we come! :)

Hey, you don't get to say that I'm the "bad guy" here. We have kayaks, we
just ordered a new canoe, and don't forget the second tent I picked up last
month, plus all of the other assorted equipment. You're just going to have
to wait...... and... so... am... I.... (self-control, must remember
self-control, nice fiberglass kayak, oops, must control paddling urges...) :)

I echo those thoughts. I also paddled the extreme at a demo here and
loved it as well. I currently paddle a GTS and it seems that the
Extreme has all the good characteristics of the GTS (tracking, hatch
space), but can also carve a mean turn and it accelerates like a bat
out of hell. I want one too. Anyone know how it handles in big water
and wind?

Do kayaks count as a business expense if they make working more
enjoyable because you know that soon you will be paddling a really
cool new 'yak?

If you have a kevlar canoe I think you need matching kevlar kayaks. Come on,
Juls and Mel, its just a little more. You KNOW you really really really want
those kevlar kayaks! That wonderful gel coat in the color of your dreams is
calling YOU! Ya'll can even get the color to match the canoe! Think how heavy
your old plastic kayaks feel as you struggle to hoist them thar barges on and
off your vehicle. Once you start easily lifting that light and airy kevlar
canoe, you just gonna have to have kevlar kayaks.

How to pay? Can you say "Magic Plastic?" 8-)

Sorry, just had to say that! I bought two kevlar kayaks after three years of
hoisting a 65 pound canoe/barge up/down from/to my third floor balcony. Thank
goodness that manglers never saw HOW I did that. I don't think they would have
appreciated the block and tackle that was temporarily attached to the building!
Course my downstairs neighbours had interesting conversations about the flying
canoe going past their windows! 8-)

Later...

Color matching a Wenonah ultra light? Ah, the color of kevlar and clear
epoxy.

gel coat? We don't need no stinkin' gel coat. Why bother with the extra
weight ;-)

Although a bag for car topping/storage is worthwhile, I noticed
discoloration (you could see the strap lines) from parking in the sun for
1 day with a skin coat boat out of a bag.

Geez! I've never seen a husband-wife exchange in a newsgroup before! How
big is your house? It must be huge if it is easier to converse by e-mail

Actually the second tent is smaller, and it packs much smaller... You see
I'm one of those "little women" that can't generate any body heat, and I
just get too cold at night. In the big tent he could escape my cold feet,
but not in this snug baby!
