Hey all you crusty cruisers and funky touring people, how do you make out bathing in salt water for weeks at a time? According to the creaky chemist, salt water only contains 3% salt. But I'm somewhat concerned about salt sores and ulcers festering up after 'many' days. I've been told that if you dry yourself thoroughly after bathing you will get most of the salt off. Some places are easier to dry than others and those are the ones I'm worried about. I wonder what happens to the salt concentration in the towel. Rinse it out like a Gortex dry suit I guess. I have a Sun Shower that works ok but I haven't used it for several/many consecutive days. BTW I use Joy dish detergent for the suds. From personal experience, I can't tell you that you won't develop sores from occasional contact and rinses, but I can confirm that you will get them from extended saturation in salt water. My feet began peeling after a week kayaking in Baja; soles of my feet and toe pads, not between toes and not inflamed or sore like athlete's foot; peeling, like a sunburn, but a thicker layer of skin. Started about a week after getting home. Don't know if it was related to the salt water.... I suspect that lots of immersion time in salt water generates a calloused skin, and it sloughs off later. Pretty ugly, alright. Martha Stewart would not like it. -- Dave Kruger Astoria, OR *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
