I use Sea Savon Salt Water Shampoo and Body Bath. Great stuff. You can get it from Southwest Sea Kayaks (www.swkayak.com). I don't think salt on the towel is really a problem, but if you use a handywipe instead of a towel, then you can wash and dry the handywipe. I don't know how any expedition kayaker can function without handywipes, yet most folks don't even know what they are! They are NOT "wet-ones." They are nylon dishcloths that last and last. My friend and I lived for 3 months on a 27 catamaran in the Bahamas. We went 3 weeks one time with only 5 gallons for fresh water (lots of rum). What we did, was to use dish soap, it lathers great in salt water, then after we were done was to use a wash cloth with fresh water to wipe off the small amount of salt left. This left us clean and salt free. Sun showers are great when you have access to fill them up but even being very frugal with the water your going to use at least a 1/2 gallon of water. Give it a try it works. According to the creaky chemist, salt water only contains 3% salt. But I'm somewhat concerned about salt sores and ulcers festering up after 'many' days. I've been told that if you dry yourself thoroughly after bathing you will get most of the salt off. Some places are easier to dry than others and those are the ones I'm worried about. I wonder what happens to the salt concentration in the towel. Rinse it out like a Gortex dry suit I guess. I have a Sun Shower that works ok but I haven't used it for several/many consecutive days. BTW I use Joy dish detergent for the suds. Clyde, You just need to paddle in a rainier climate ;-) Here in the NW we just stand outside with a bar of soap and wait the 5-10 minutes it takes for a rain cloud to pass. Actually, the longest paddle trips I've done were 14 days on salt water and I didn't have any problems from bathing in the salt water(I'm not known for using towels, so yes, I did have a salt build up at times). My guess is that it is a bit of a wives tale and any sores may be due to other problems such as bacteria, or from the crystals acting like grains of sand - I sweat so heavily that the grains of sand theory would dissolve. Even a ten day Baja trip with a shortage of fresh water, and no problems. Happy paddling - Saul -----Original Message----- From: Sisler, Clyde <Clyde.Sisler_at_wang.com> To: 'Paddlewise' <paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net> Date: Tuesday, May 04, 1999 7:11 AM Subject: [Paddlewise] Salt water bathing >Hey all you crusty cruisers and funky touring people, how do you make out >bathing in salt water for weeks at a time? > >According to the creaky chemist, salt water only contains 3% salt. I use moist toweletts. I think the product is called "Wet Ones". They can be purchased in a quantity of 15 which comes in a nice, flat, water resistent, resealable envelope. If its too cold to bath in the water, these work great by themselves and they also are good to wipe down the skin after bathing in salt water. Prell concentrate shampoo - for bathing, clothes, dishes. Probably causes cancer, acid rain, and ozone degradation, but it works well. We also used Prell in basic training in the USAF 'cause supposedly it left no trace on the shower tiles(and a used bar of soap was hard to pass inspection). Who knows if it was true or not but it was fokelore and *everyone* used it. >Prell concentrate shampoo - for bathing, clothes, dishes. My impression is that _prolonged_ immersion/contact can cause some of the troublesome problems like ulceration, etc. I don't think that a daily bath with a good drying should be a problem. I'm curious, where are you planning to paddle that has no fresh water available for more than a week at a stretch? Baja, maybe? I'll be spending the summer in Newfoundland where I expect to make several 1-2 week tours through the east coast islands. Time will not be a constraint and I don't want bathing to be a constraint either. Will there fresh water nearby? I dunno, probably. If not, I'll be carrying a limited amount of fresh water, not for bathing. I also don't want a love sick moose following me around when I get back to the mainland nor do I want to have to worry about standing downwind of myself. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
Salt water soap works great if you towel off after. -----Original Message----- From: Sisler, Clyde <Clyde.Sisler_at_wang.com> To: 'Paddlewise' <paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net> Date: Tuesday, May 04, 1999 7:26 AM Subject: [Paddlewise] Salt water bathing >Hey all you crusty cruisers and funky touring people, how do you make out >bathing in salt water for weeks at a time? > >According to the creaky chemist, salt water only contains 3% salt.
