Actually, I own three kayaks and four shells, so I do not have the same bias as others here. If I am in the mood for strenuous exercise and speed, I use a shell. If I am in the mood to commune with nature and want light exercise, I use a kayak. For camping, a kayak is required because there is no storage in a shell. As to speed, I have been talking three mile head races and you have been talking 1,000 meter sprints. Moreover, I am not of the view that shells are generally superior to kayaks. I know that position is held by sailboats, which is what most of you folks really would enjoy most and try to turn your kayaks into.
