Dear SANDY (not kathy), Those two massive pieces of metal at the bottom of the van are but another two Thule saddles for carrying yet another kayak below the top mounted one that is visible. (hang on, let me check that that is what you were inquiring about)...... Sure. The vertical bar you see is the what you would expect to see crossing the roof of a 'normal' vehicle, and indeed you might see on my vehicle were I not quite so perverse. The saddles have a yellow pull strap wound about it for harnessing the kayaks to it...... It really is quite stable, although I don't think I would recommend it for the driver's side applications as I fear Savannah drivers, and oleanders are very much more kayak friendly (although very toxic......did you know that?). The first angle is bolted just behind the front wheel in a solid little piece of metal on the frame, and the other is just in front of the rear wheel. Make sure that your sliding door slides sufficiently or cussing will result in the modifications. Regrettably, I know of no old VW web sites, ( and have never even been to a Dead concert), but I am sure that this august list has people who know of a VW website or sixteen. Stay upright Chris *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************Received on Wed Jun 23 1999 - 19:44:56 PDT
