There is nothing mentioned but my experience in using WGS84 has been positive. The Garmin 12XL I've been playing with uses WGS84 as default, but you can change it easily. Most USGS topos are NAD27, and if you are trying to position yourself on them, you should change your receiver's data format to that. Seems to me that I've seen some recent topos that were to WGS84, but don't remember for sure. I could be mistaken on that. All the one's I have are 1927.
