Here's a thought carelessly tossed in the ring:

Carry a small, highpowered paintball pistol. It's
nontoxic, stings like a mother, and won't kill them.
A thought - it better be a brightly colored gun -
that way you won't be mistaken for an assassin, just a
pissed off kayaker whom they better steer clear of.
And it so handily straps right to the deck.

My inlaws used to have problems with the Jetskiers
from across the lake. These guys used to go ripping
by the swim area, follow our boats too close and
generally acted in great disregard for the lake
community.

The first guy actually drove through the swim area
barely missing some departing boaters, a friend of
ours another lakehome owner chased him down with his
speed boat and royally chewed him out, wrote down his
license number and called the sheriff who issued a big
fat ticket.

The second guy (a friend of the first) did the same
thing on the Fourth of July. - No one was swimming at
the time, but as we knew his route we readied a cannon
for his return pass.
I held one side, my brother the other, and my
brother inlaw commanded the waterballon sling. (It's
reputed to shoot a tennis ball sized ballon 120 yards
- and at 50 yards, it can hurt)
The Jetskier came through again and we drilled him
in the side of the chest and took him clean off the
Jetski. Man, that was so funny.
His dad was fishing nearby and came to see what
his son was yelling about. Only to laugh and tell him
that it served him right and something about respect.
  - As he clambered back on and left, we wrote his
number down and called the sheriff who came over to
serve a breathalyzer.

    Ahh, Jetskis - good times.

This is the most stupid idea I have ever heard on this
forum!

It's a great way to get killed!
"Gee Officer, he was pointing a gun at me so I had to blow
him away! I didn't know it was a paint gun!"
If you are going to carry a gun, make sure you know how and
are prepared to use it and you have the will to kill what or whom you are
aiming at.

I am glad Bob brought it up in such a mild form; I agree with him. Look
at it this way: Would you ride down a road on skates and throw paint
at some guys in a souped-up car that whizzes by you in a manner
you didn't like? No! They will just come back and run you over. Same
with a kayak and a jetski or a power boat.

I was once on a club trip when some power boat came a little close and
throw up a large wake. A woman in the group gave them the finger. I
read her the riot act for she had most certainly endangered us all.
What if the operator had had a few too many beers and, in a form of road
rage, decided to run over a few of us. Absolutely under no
circumstances do anything to provoke anyone who has more power than you
and anything with a motor is more powerful than your kayak. Your most
powerful form of redress and retaliation is your brain. Take note of
the offending vessel's color and description and name. Use your marine
radio to report it or later do so from a pay phone. In time repeat
offenders will get caught and get grounded.

Hi All!
Have to chime in on Bobs side on this one. Too many wackos out there, and
those paintball guns look pretty realistic, especially at a distance.
Anyone unexpectedly pointing one at me would be quite likely to receive an
extremely unpleasant .44 caliber surprise. We were always taught that you
never point any weapon at something you don't want to put holes in . . .
'Sides, all PWC operators aren't morons, it's just the morons that make the
headlines. Give the jetski people a break. Most of 'em are regular guys and
gals out havin' fun just like you and me. Just because you're burning
carbohydrates instead of hydrocarbons doesn't give you any exclusive rights
to the surface of our public waterways.
Sorry to rant, but we all gotta learn a bit of tolerance for our fellow fools.
ByeBye! S.

good thing you all don't live in colorado, pointing a paintgun at someone
will land you in jail for felony menacing, at the least, i'm sure. gun=gun
as far as the law is concerned.

Perhaps the benefit of the doubt should be given to the
	gentleman's header, "Here's a thought carelessly tossed
	into the ring."

Surely you are exhibiting a whimsical even playful 'solution'
to to the obnoxious jet ski problem in your area........

you were......wern't you? Please tell me you were only joking?

Yup. I'm not sure where Phil paddles but I don't think the jetskiiers
I've encountered would be intimidated by a paintball pistol. And I
sure wouldn't want the only thing between me and a ticked-off
jetskiier to be a paintball gun and a plastic sea kayak....

Maybe Tiny would be a better choice.... :-)

Cheers,

Wow, two people from UpNorth I have to agree to in one day! 8-) Whats
happening to the world! 8-)

When I had my close encounter with the boater from NY, I had was steaming but I
was literally shaking my head and just going to go on by. The operator opened
his mouth and said something to me so I gave him both barrels. Verbally that
is. If he had reacted in any aggressive manner or if I had thought he was under
the influence I would have pulled around the point and landed my kayak and found
a ranger to handle things. As it was, he understood his mistake and I continued
on my 20 mile trip. I was very very very observant of all boat traffic for the
rest of the day. Especially for a white runabout with NY registration with two
couples on board! 8-)

While I hate jetskis with a passion, I did have two jetskis actually slow down
to wake speed well away from my wife and I once upon a time. It was a
deliberate act of kindness on their part and we both could not believe it. I
wanted to thank them but by the time we come to our senses as to what they had
done the jetskis had passed as by!

To point a paintball gun or lord help you shoot at someone is asking for lots of
trouble. At a minimum it is going to be assault. You state laws are going to
very in severity. Since paintball guns are g u n s, the pointed at person may
assume the worse and shoot before you do with something that packs more sting
than a paintball. Even throwing something at a jetskier is assault. At least
in North Carolina and Florida.

Once while paddling on a canal, a bunch of drunks in a powerboat tried to
dump us and my wife gave them the finger. The turned around and came
straight for me and missed me by a couple of feet then did it again. Someone
in the backyard of one of the houses on the canal started yelling at them
and they broke off the attack. I carried a gun with me for the next few
months when I paddled that area. I never saw them again.

BTW, that brings up an interesting question. Do most folks on the list carry
their guns in a deck holster or in the cockpit? Are there any skirts or PFDs
with integral holsters? Do any kayaks come with gun ports or glassed in
holsters? Does a kevlar vest float?
