Clyde - This sounds to me like the sort of disequilibrium which occasionally
comes from temperature changes in the inner ear (not the middle ear, which is
the part behind your eardrum which is responsible for hearing). One test of
the intactness of this inner ear vestibular mechanism is to instill fluid of
varying temperatures, in order to deliberately cause dizziness or vertigo.

Was the water where you practiced quite cold? I'm wondering if, rather than
being the cause of your problem, the ear plugs didn't work well enough to
keep the cold water shock from reaching your inner ears. Snug ear plugs in
*both* ears and a well-fitting neoprene balaclava may ameriorate the problem
considerably. They sure won't make it worse, and may well be worth a try.

I also have had the same experenced, and the dizziness lasted over an
hour. It gives one pause to think it could happen in a serious situation. I
have found that if I use earplugs in both ears, even the cheap foam type
used for sound protection, that they eliminate any dizziness. Hope this
helps.
