Susie ....
Ahh, yes, I remember the day well. Newspaper headlines read "One-boat
Man Goes Over Edge", or something like that. Actually, I would have been
happy forever if the old "aluminum Grumann" had cooperated. Grandpa had
a fibreglas pirogue, but the canoe WAS MINE !! Epoxy and heli-arc kept
it going way beyond what a sane paddler would have used. But, hey, it
finally got rigged out for sailing (with home-made lateen rigging,
leeboards, and tiller rudder ); had an outrigger setup; had a small
outboard motor mount; was indestructible ...well, almost. It was a
Louisiana canoe that finally gave up the good fight against an Arkansas
river. Newspaper headlines read "Man Lives, Boat Doesn't". ( I still
get sad thinking about that final sight ! )
Well, I knew about rivets and epoxy and fibreglas and .....Hey, what's
this ? Plastic ? Tupperware ? ....WOW !!
Now to answer the question ....The itch has ALWAYS been there.
My pile went from a quickly gotten OT 169 to a more organized approach
toward Arkansas rivers via 2 ww yaks, and finally to a Sea Lion for
tour-camping . I still have Grandpa's pirogue and it still carries its
share of the itch ! I love my current pile of boats, but I don't think I
have as much fun with ALL of them as I did with that grey-ghost canoe
there in the foggy, mist of my memory ....
Anybody got any good URL's for used boat lists ?? .......adieu
........Peyton (Louisiana)
