I've used sandals, but they got caught in the foot pegs once too often. Then I went to Teva Wet Climbers (pricey), but they turned out to be too stiff and just slightly too big for comfort in my boat. Now I'm wearing -- and very happy with -- paddling shoes by Five-Ten. They're very pliable, take up less room than the Tevas, have great heel protection, and give very good traction on rocks and -- up to a point -- even on slime. They close with a soft rubber strap that seems to exert no pressure on the instep, yet are secure enough to keep the shoe on when wading through muck. If I have any complaint, it might be that the soles are soft enough to let me feel the pointy stones I step on sometimes. But if that's the price I pay for their pliability inside the boat, then I'll pay it.
