Norman: I have wrestled with this problem for years. When I had a Current Design Solstice, rear storage had sufficient height and larager hatch to allow me to stuff a larger (in diameter) synthetic sleeping bag. New kayaker, shorter trips, no problem. Front hatch was dryer, but too small to accept the bag. Then I got kayaks with less height in rear hatch (Seda Glider and Dagger Meridian) and had to get a smaller sleeping bag. Opted for Campmor 20-deg mummy long in down which stuffed to 7"x14", weighed 2# 6oz, smallest packed sleeping bag I've seen and no problem...except that although it stayed dry in the drybag, it always got wet through condensation and body humidity on long trips in cold weather. This year switched to a Marmot Windriver Long Polagard 3D that packs out very close to the down (8"x14") when you use a compression bag. Prefer the Marmot. Also got a new Eureka Zephyr XT tent with special vent gable on raincover roof that eliminates the condensation problem.
