Don't forget a good reliable watch.

I was paddling off the Oregon coast Friday evening. The fog that had been laying offshore a couple of miles came in thick. The waypoint I thought I loaded in the GPS on the beach had disappeared. Oops. (note to self: always verify you got a waypoint) I did some math with elapsed time and estimated distance covered and picked a time at which I'd land if I hadn't seen the landing site. I knew the beach I had covered was friendly, but south of the launch had some rocky spots. If I got close enough to see landmarks I was in the surf, so I landed at the appoint time about a quarter mile from the target. Now if I'd had to find a little cove instead of a big target...

And another thing. A tea candle makes a great emergency firestarter. Works even when wet. The kind in the little tin cup.
