Has anyone here looked at the upper right corner of page 19 of the August
'99 issue of Canoe & Kayak?

Yes, I did! :-)

I was alerted to the column by a friend and when I went to look at it
was knocked over to see my name there in that context. I really don't
know the columnist, Shelley Johnson. We talked on the phone once or
twice in the early 1990s when she was doing articles for a tabloid
sports giveaway east coast publication. We may have met briefly at a
symposium in passing. So I was very surprised and delighted. Goes to
show that you never know how you may be affecting others by what you do.

        Here's the text from P. 19, August '99 C&K
**************
Unsung Heroes
Maybe it was the second glass of wine that launched me into nostalgia and
set me to reminiscing
about the good old days of sea kayaking -- back when you honked
and waved at any passing car that carried a boat on top. It's time we
celebrated sea kayakers who go out of their way to help others get started,
continue to inform all of us, and even occasionally wax poetic. These are
the folks who endlessly respond to mailing-list postings, always seem to
know the best routes and tips, and enlist in every boathouse and island
cleanup. Since this was my idea, I get to go first. I am forever stumbling
across his kind and informarive responses to mailing-list questions. He is
always reminding us about rallies and letter-writing campaigns for good
causes. Instead of scribbled online responses, his are thoughtful and often
quite moving. And you never get a glimpse of a commercial motive in his
communications. I hereby nominate Ralph Diaz. You can find him hanging out
on the nyckayaker_at_envirolink.org mailing list or paddling the Hudson River.
Kudos, Ralph--maybe i'll see you out on the water someday. Send in your
suggestions for "Unsung Heroes" to shelley_at_canoekayak.com or Shelley
Johnson, Canoe & Kayak Magazine, PO Box 3146, Kirkland, WA 98083-3146.
