Hi, I got this request but obviously live a bit too far away from the site to be of help. ----------------------------------- Dear Mr. Diaz:: I was referred to you by Mr. Jay Gingrich, a member of the Rocky Mtn. Sea Kayaking Club. This is in regards to my son Maligiaq, age 17, who hopes to compete in the races. Maligiaq is from Greenland, but is staying temporarily at my home in Colorado Springs, CO. He is the current and 3-time Greenland kayaking champion and has been sponsored by numerous sea kayaking clubs in the U.S. to demonstrate and teach Greenland-style kayak rolling techniques. He is very excited about competing in the Quebec races. Because of his limited use of English, his unfamiliarity with the Montreal area, and our limited money, he will need some assistance while in Quebec. We have purchased round-trip bus tickets to the area, have registered him for the races, and completed the liability waiver. Maligiaq will be arriving at the Montreal bus station from Albany, N.Y. on July 28 at 05:05 p.m., and returning 11 August at 12:01 p.m. Maligiaq will be able to pay for the entrance fee and the transportation of the kayak to Forestville. However, Maligiaq will not be able to afford lodging and transportation to and from the bus station and and between the race sites. He might be able to afford to rent a kayak there, depending on the cost. He will need a few items of the required gear for the races, which he can pay for, but will need some assistance in getting to the store(s) and getting around in the Montreal area. We were hoping that someone could loan a competitive kakak, if not perhaps one of the stores would sponsor him and let him use one of theirs. Additionally, there will be 5 paddlers from Greenland attending the races. Maligiaq might be able to lodge with them, but first we need to find out where they will be staying. If he can stay with them, he would need transportation to and from the bus station and the accomodations where he will be staying. We are hoping to find some who can take him "under their wings" and make sure he has the equipment for the races and understands the rules for them. Any help or referrals would be sincerely appreciated. I know there are many people who would like to help but I'd suggest everyone wait until this is verified by Ralph or someone. This is, unfortunately, exactly the kind of group ripe for picking because we all have been reading about this young man and want to promote our sport. I am on other lists that have been taken for a ride by people who sound legit and write lovely, personal replies. I guess at some point you just have to take the risk and say it is better to be scamed than to let the chance to do something good and important go by. That is a personal choice we each make but it won't hurt to temper good will with caution. Hopefully we can get this verified quickly and that will solve that question at least. Then we can figure out just how to help him in the best way. It is not a matter of money, it is a matter of a 17 year old champion, who knows no French and little English, moving around in Quebec. The kind of help Maligiaq needs is physical, that is, he needs someone to take him by the hand to the race. Are there any Quebecois in this list? - Julio > > I know there are many people who would like to help but I'd suggest everyone > wait until this is verified by Ralph or someone. Just speaking off the top of my head, I might suggest sending a check to his dad whose name and address is in the original posting. Make it out to his dad and indicate on it somewhere that it is to help Maligiaq's funding for the race. I am astounded at the reaction thusfar. Kirk Olsen sent the posting on to the Baidarka listserver. Joe Pylka sent it on to the NE Paddlers bulletin board etc. John Winters also got the request directly and is working on a way to help (I wonder if John's good friend and fellow Canadian, Tim Sponsons, could lend a hand :-)). what would you like to have verified ... i have been hosting maligiaq off and on here in colorado for a month or so, and have met geno padilla as well. i may be able to verify whatever it is you want. he's a great kid, and has been training hard for this race... mark On Thu, 22 Jul 1999, Joan Spinner wrote: > > I know there are many people who would like to help but I'd suggest everyone > wait until this is verified by Ralph or someone. Ditto on the Mark Zen comments (Maligiaq has been passed from friend to friend somewhat) that the letter is verifiable. John Heath was at the center of the distribution universe for a while. If someone is still in doubt you could contact John for final verification. On pronouncing his name.... My best phonetic impression is ma-lee-gee-ak (hard gee, like geese, NOT "gee, I missed the bus") The end of the sylable is sort of swallowed. The Greenlandic language is really hard, but fun to try and learn. The "ll" is a killer. You put your tongue to the roof of your mouth and sort of blow around it. That combo is in the word for thank you. :) jennifer *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
