True, Greenlanders once used kayaks to spear seals and fish, while we use them recreationally. But it's a great idea here...forget rod and reel fishing. Let's do it right... This weekend, everyone get their kayaks out and go spearfishing! ;-) Regards, Leander leander_at_worldnet.att.net *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************

The kayak remains a perfectly useful hunting craft, both in the sense of being able to access very out of the way public areas, and then hunting in a normal manner, or for spearfishing from above water. I have already tried using the typical divers pollspear from the kayak, and it worked remarkably well, considering how little practice time I've given to it. Shortly, I'll have a smaller 2 band speargun that I believe may be a more effective answer for kayak spearfishing. I also intend this winter to make my first kayak born duck hunting trips, after seeing numerous traditional "duckboat" designs which are gradually becoming more & more kayak-like. One interesting thing about paddling, is that the law allows hunting ducks from moving craft, only if they are propelled solely by paddle/pole. So this should be interesting to say the least. And if I can come up with a way of using archery without littering the water with shafts, I'll be able to do duck hunting almost exactly as it was done by folks 1000's of years ago in the coastal marshes of Texas.
