Doug - I would be very interested in hearing about these "permits". When I was in Kauai last year, having not preplanned this last minute trip, and speaking with several different outfitters, regardless of my skill, they would only allow people out in doubles. Part of their reasoning was most people are unskilled, would fatigue or get sea-sick. They figure 1/2 the people can manage it and 1/2 may not but by using only doubles, everyone gets back. I opted to forgo the opportunity. I confess that I was so disappointed in not being able to kayak the NaPali coast, that I toured it via those loud and irritating helocopters. What a sight! The next time I go I would love to do it from water level, but in a single decked kayak.
