In addition to securing the boat to the saddles using nylon straps or rope, I've been forcing myself to use bow/stern lines (also nylon strap or rope) attached to the bumpers or frame of the car just in case. It only takes an extra minute or two to attach them, and they could easily keep a boat from taking off like a kite if the rack-to-roof or boat-to-rack attachments fail. A loose boat could really hurt someone in another car besides self-destructing when it hits the pavement at high speeds. Just like all other aspects of paddling, better to be safe than sorry IMHO. BTW, I've been a happy Thule customer for a long time. No problems with saddles or other attachments rolling on the rectangular bars. I've got 2 ski racks, saddles, ww kayak stackers, bike racks, an Adventurer cargo box that I've accumulated over about 13 years and all have worked as designed. My only gripe is with their prices, and I don't think Yakima is any closer to reasonable. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************Received on Thu Aug 26 1999 - 06:28:12 PDT
