I'm assuming your are looking for a skin on frame fast kayak.

One source of online info is the searchable archives of the baidarka
mailing list at http://robroy.totalsports.net/baidarka

As for a fast boat I would look at getting the plans for George Dyson's
5.7 meter Shields interpretation or possibly the aleut single which
is detailed in David Zimmerly's Qajaq. The caribou hunting kayak, at 24'+
by 15" might be another option.

Or you could design your own. A friend, Bill Low, has a baidarka
interpretation that is quite quick, his current boats are wider than a
racer though. I've got a couple of pictures of his boat at
http://people.ne.mediaone.net/jkolsen/html/excal_details.html
I believe the pictured boat is 18' with a 22" beam and weighs 28 pounds.

The basic aleut baidarka shape works well for a fast boat. Bill has built a
whole mess of skin boats. One of his previous designs had a simplified
baidarka bow with a greenland style stern. That was an interesting boat
to paddle, it paddled well at relaxed touring speeds but felt like it was
doing a tailstand if you tried to paddle it fast. Bill replaced the
greenland style stern with a baidarka style stern which was greatly
improved, the boat stayed at a nice trim even while sprinting. Both boats
looked to be properly trimmed when at rest with a paddler in them.

I built one of the Dyson 5.7 boats. I made a couple of mistakes building it
so it's not a raceable boat, in particular the nylon/hypalon skin loosens up
when it's in the water.
