Hi Folks:
I am Geno Padilla, father of Maligiaq.
I received an e-mail from him today saying he finished in 8th place in
the 500 meter sprint race today. This was against all racers, including
the professional division. Tomorrow (Sunday) he will compete in the 28.5
kilometer "seeding" race against ALL racers. The top 100 will go on to
Forrestville for the 55 kilometer race next weekend. I'm confident he
will advance. He will be in the amateur division for this race and I
feel he has a good chance to "place".

Thanks to Redwing Designs and QCC Kayaks for providing him with a
competitive kayak and some gear. Thanks to Mr. Michael Bradley of Quebec
for transporting him and finding a place to stay in Montreal. Thanks to
Serge Savard of Quebec (he placed 3rd today) for his help in getting
Maligiaq around the "beauracracy" of the races. Thanks to the Inuit
Cooperative of Northern Quebec for providing him with the rest of the
required race gear and for his meals. Without this help he would have
been relatively helpless in Montreal.
It's still "up in the air" as to how he will get to Forrestville and
where he will stay there.

I have received $105 in donations from 5 individuals. I didn't know what
to expect and am sincerely grateful to those folks; you'll be hearing
from us when Maligiaq returns.
I'm waiting for Maligiaq to tell me how much money he'll need and when
he'll need it, then I'll get a certified check for what I've received and
overnight post it to him. He'll probably need more than I've received.
I'm hoping that he'll be fortunate enough to get such generous assistance
as the aforementioned have provided. If not, perhaps his mom and
stepfather can wire him some funds from Greenland. Unfortunately, I have
to live on disability income for the time being, so all I can provide him
is my love and encouragement and help with the logistics and
communicating with the race officials and all those who have offered
their assistance.

The Iniut Circumpolar Conference, the Greenland Paddling Clubs, Arrowhead
Paddling Club, and some individuals are hoping to get Maligiaq to those
villages in Arctic Canada and Alaska whose people are interested in
renewing their kayaking heritage. This will probably happen next summer.
Maligiaq has been invited to the village of Povirnituq to help them get
a paddling club started and to the Eastern Arctic Games in Inukjuaq while
he is in Quebec and after the races. He has more plans/invitations than
he has time for before he returns to Greenland in October, so if he can't
make it this summer, we'll hope for next year and some better
organization. Maligiaq and others would like to form an alliance between
all the Arctic countries' paddlers and exchange knowledge and
information; have paddlers travel to other's countries and set up some
races and rolling contests. Mr. Chuck Sutherland of the Arrowhead
Paddling Club would like to form an alliance between his club and the
Greenland Paddling Clubs and perhaps work out some kind of "exchange"
program. I am not currently a kayaker and it amazes me that so many
people in some many diverse areas are so dedicated to sea kayaking. It
seems that it is an up-and-coming sport/hobby in the U.S. It would be
great to see the Arctic countries rediscover the heritage that they gave
to the rest of the world.

I will keep all who are interested updated on "Paddlewise" as to how he's
doing, both personally and in the races.

If any of the kayak clubs would be interested in having him
demonstrate/instruct, please keep in touch and perhaps he can visit your
area next summer.

He is experiencing an event that he will remember all his life.
Thanks to all who have contributed!

Most Sincerely,

AUGUSTO E. PADILLA

This got me thinking, with the talk of the ACA and the BCU recognizing the
Greenland style of paddling and teaching classes on it , did it get the
approval of the Greenland kayaking club (?) and or they helping out or
getting anything from it. Did they contact MALIGIAQ sense he is there
representative here? It is there heritage and I have not heard whether they
are involved or no. With the way the USA and the Brits are I would not be
surprised if they were not even contacted but hope they were. After
reading Greg Stamers article on the way MALIGIAQ paddles (
http://www.jacksonville.net/~dldecker/fskaGreenland.htm ) and talking to
several people and watching several videos of the accepted way of Greenland
paddling seems to differ from the way Greenlanders do it. So are we going
to be taught the right way ( Greenlanders way) or our own way USA and
Brittish. ??

Geno: Thanks for the info. I don't know much about racing. They race all
categories together or is it time etc. worked out later? Where he placed
8th, do you know out of how many participants?
