Just a thought on Liz's situation. I've heard of a thing called a "Brazos
Rack". It is typically attached to a trailer hitch to allow a pick-up truck
to carry a kayak. The bow is supported in the conventional way with a Yak
or Thule bar and the rear by this trailer hitch device. Instead of a meager
3 or 4 foot spread you're up to, perhaps, 6+. If adjustable for height it
should work on a car.

I haven't any details, but I heard of it at Pecos Jack's Wilderness
Furnishings of Sugarland (?), Texas. You could ask Jack via e-mail; I
believe his website is www.wildfire.com.

Blue skies.
