I can heartily endorse Yaesu radios, but I have a handheld ham 2 meter FT-411E that has been modified to also send and receive on all marine VHF bands, 10 weather bands, pvt. and commercial aircraft bands, some ambulance and police frequencies, US Government, and 2 way radio bands. Mine is small enough to fit in a ziploc on paddling trips, and I carry a telescoping antenna, (extends from 6 inches to about 3 feet) which allows for extended range when I'm trying to reach a far away repeater, either 2 meter or VHF, helpful if you're on the water or in a low lying area. I believe most Yaesus have optional battery cases you can buy that hold 6 AA cell batteries, in case your rechargeables run down. The 411-E is quite small, about 4 inches without the 4 inch rubber duckie antenna. I carry a laminated card with the USA VHF Frequencies; (ie. channel 16- 156.800), since the radio doesn't have the marine channels 01 thru 87, but I could easily program the VHF channels in for single button recall. My only complaint has been that the waterproof sacks that I kept getting from West Marine, made for the VHF handhelds would only last a couple of months before the side seams split out. I think I may have returned 3 of them for replacements before giving up and resorting to ziplocs. I have no experience with Standards or Icoms, or the waterproof versions. Good luck.
