As an experienced runner and inexperienced kayaker I'ld support that 100%.
Its also a good idea to avoid alcohol the night before heavy exercise in hot
weather. I'm occasionally surprised to hear of reports from experienced
paddlers describing alcohol consumption before a long trip. I quite often
drink but never the night before heavy duty running or paddling. I'm not
suggesting that paddling is always going to be heavy exercise though.
