As an experienced runner and inexperienced kayaker I'ld support that 100%. Its also a good idea to avoid alcohol the night before heavy exercise in hot weather. I'm occasionally surprised to hear of reports from experienced paddlers describing alcohol consumption before a long trip. I quite often drink but never the night before heavy duty running or paddling. I'm not suggesting that paddling is always going to be heavy exercise though.
