Years back, REI had a thing called a Kuban hitch (hope I'm spelling this
right) so a camera could be positioned on one's chest. One of my friends
paddled the Grand Canyon (Colorado River) with a Nikonos camera on this rig,
under her life jacket, for the entire length of the paddle in a whitewater
kayak. Did just fine and she had great pictures, camera always handy. She
paddled every rapid too! 30,000 cfs.

The main purpose of a Kuban hitch (yes, it is spelled correctly) is to
keep the camera from bouncing or swinging when hiking, skiing, or climbing.
If you wear the camera under a PFD, which is how I carry my Nikonos, a
Kuban Hitch isn't necessary.

For cross-country skiing, I use an alternative to the Kuban Hitch called
a Harnastrap -- basically a long strap that criss-crosses the chest and
snaps into a fitting that screws into the camera's tripod socket. However,
I haven't seen one of these for sale in years.
